5月20日 She's my ride homeNoon Friday, I am coming up to an intersection and the light turns yellow, I stop. There is a girl holding an arrow shaped sign, spinning it around, advertising a check cashing business in the nearby strip mall. She is wearing a t-shirt and black cargo pants, pierced eyebrow, black mussed hair. She’s a tough customer, and not thrilled with her current assignment. I’ve got the radio on KTCL, which is rare. As one song comes to an end, a police motorcycle comes up to the intersection with it’s lights on. But it’s not a cop, Funeral procession. The guy on the Harley has the look of a mall security guard, but he knows his job, go take the intersection, and hold the intersection. He does, no one objects, no one honks when the red light turns green. The first black Cadillac comes up the hill. The next song comes on the radio, it’s She’s My Ride Home, by Blue October. I look over at the girl holding the sign. She’s flipped it over, holds it low. She gives a nod to one of the cars driving buy, it’s subtle but it’s a nod, clearer than any of the arrow shaking or hair mussing. The nod holds the gaze of an older woman, grey hair, in a gold Buick passing buy. I'll be reaching for the stars with you, honey We drive To leave the past and clear the mind Now close your eyes Yeah we won We were just strangers watching the passing of someone we did not know. |
